A couple of decades ago I got introduced to Bill Jordan, famous border patrol gun fighter. He had read a number of my officer survival columns and was quite positive about what I had written.

He was quite complementary about my efforts and I was really humbled. When I asked him what he considered the secret of surviving a gunfight, he responded "master the basics!"

Great advice and it bears repeating. A friend and I were just talking about Bill Jordan and I just might need to find that book somewhere.

That's what I've been working on with the officers I train.

I often quote from our friend John Farnam:

"Advanced shooting is being able to apply the fundamentals when your pants leg is on fire."

I have never been able to improve on that.

Decades ago, John and I were in pancake house eating pancakes. We were in town for a police training conference. A guy came up and said, "you're John Farnam and you're that expletive deleted Evan Marshall who likes 9MM's". Totally deadpan John looked at me and said, "Evan, kill him!" I responded that I had killed the last one and that it was his turn. We looked up and the guy had fled so John asked me to pass the blueberry syrup

I wonder if he injured himself in his haste to get back to his mother's basement and get onto his computer so he could tell the World
just how little you and John actually know.

Sadly, I don't usually think that fast. I'd likely have said 'OK' and reached toward my right hip. Ace

I'm like Ace: I will think of a 'snappy retort'.... about two hours later....
