Now we know why VP Biden refused to characterize the Taliban as "enemies". The sellout is in the works.

I guess I misunderstood. I thought we were in Afcrapistan to defeat/punish the taliban, not aq. It was that taliban that gave safe haven to the aq for their training camps and why we went after them. Or am I wrong?

Andy, you are right as I remember, but Obama doesn't let the facts and history get in the way of his re-election and the down grading of the USA! Retfed

I do recall Bush saying that anyone not with us would be considered to be against us. Or words to that effect

Excellent article.

As is the one on the sidebar about gun control killing jobs.

these negotiations began over a year ago when Robert Gates was SecDef, I think he's still a big supporter of talks.

Depending on how far you want to go back in time, the CIA created the Taliban and helped them come to power in Afghanastan.

We didn't exactly create them all by ourselves, but we certainly helped. Pakistan played a big part in their rise, as did Saudi Arabia (financially).

the CIA used the Taliban much the same way the OSS used Ho Ch Minh to fight the Japanese, we always seem to chose the losing team in the end.

Afghanistan is going to be one long stupid civil war after we leave, time to go and let them have at it.

Somewhere we made the erroneous blanket statement that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and forgot how to qualify "the enemy of my enemy is still my enemy" where needed. Guess it's just too complicated the higher ups need over simplification...

At any particular point in time, all these groups are simply pursuing their own interests as they see them at the moment. When it was in the Taliban's interest to accept the help of the CIA, they did. That didn't mean they were 'on our side'. It meant they saw that they could be benefitted by accepting our help.

At present it's in Pakistan's interest to take the foreign aid dollars we're giving them. Anyone who thinks that means that they're 'our allies', is in for a big (and unpleasant) surprise.
